Hapag Lloyd almost doubled its pre-tax result (EBIT) last year (+86%) to 17.5 billion euros on a turnover of 34.5 billion euros (2021: 22.3 billion). This is evident from the provisional figures of the German container shipping company for the 2022 financial year. Last year’s extreme profit jump was also entirely due to the high container rates in the first nine months of the fiscal year. For example, the average price per teu last year at the German shipping company was at a record level of 2,863 dollars (2,625.8 euros). The transported volume, on the other hand, fell slightly (-100,000 TEU) to 11.8 million TEU.

After the spot rates, the charter prices in container shipping also seem to have entered a free fall. This can be deduced from a report by the German ship broker Harper Petersen. Its Harpex index, which tracks price formation in the charter market for container ships, has fallen by no less than 17% in the past week. Compared to the highest level ever in April this year, the weekly index is now 33% lower at 3095 points. That is the lowest level in more than a year.

QUARTERLY FIGURES
Hapag-Lloyd made $4.7 billion in profit in the first three months of this year, half a billion more than last year. The shipping company owes this to ‘a much higher average freight price’, which at USD 2774 per TEU was more than 80% above the level of a year ago. Revenue rose by $1 billion to $9 billion. That means that the Germans made a net profit of 52 cents for every dollar of turnover.
