GREECE

The container ship ‘Luna Maersk’ (4,000 teu) will sail again on Wednesday, after the vessel was startled by a fire in one of the containers it had on board near the Greek coast on Monday evening.

The ship of the Danish container shipping company Maersk was on its way from Piraeus to Thessaloniki on Monday when a fire broke out in one of the containers. The crew managed to contain the fire themselves before it could spread to surrounding containers, but then turned back to Piraeus to let the authorities take stock.

FIRE NOT YET EXTINGUISHED

If fuel were to leak from the still burning car carrier ‘Fremantle Highway’ north of Ameland, the Netherlands in the coming days, it would spread to the north and not towards the Wadden Islands. This is due to “the current and foreseen wind and wave direction for the coming days,” writes outgoing minister Mark Harbers (Infrastructure and Water Management) in a letter to the House of Representatives.

Hapag Lloyd almost doubled its pre-tax result (EBIT) last year (+86%) to 17.5 billion euros on a turnover of 34.5 billion euros (2021: 22.3 billion). This is evident from the provisional figures of the German container shipping company for the 2022 financial year. Last year’s extreme profit jump was also entirely due to the high container rates in the first nine months of the fiscal year. For example, the average price per teu last year at the German shipping company was at a record level of 2,863 dollars (2,625.8 euros). The transported volume, on the other hand, fell slightly (-100,000 TEU) to 11.8 million TEU.
