BIPARTISAN INFRASTRUCTURE LAW

The Biden-Harris government announces that it will invest $703 million in improving port infrastructure. The amount will be invested in, among other things, the construction of railways and roads and the electrification of port equipment.

The investments are part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a multi-billion dollar package intended to tackle the entire infrastructure in the country. The 703 million for ports is intended to “get goods on the shelves faster and reduce costs for American families,” the US Department of Transportation reports.

Secretary Pete Buttigieg calls the 703 million “a record amount” for the ports. The subsidy will benefit 41 projects in both seaports and inland ports. In Columbus, Ohio, for example, a railroad is being built that will connect the inner harbour to the rail network. In Greenbay, Wisconsin, an old power plant is being demolished to make way for a new terminal and in Jacksonville, Florida, investments are being made in electric container stackers and cranes.

According to the ministry, the investments should mainly help to increase the reliability of the supply chain. Emissions in the ports must also be reduced.
